It’s the beginning of 2019 and while we’re all worried about keeping our New Years’ resolutions, the LGBTQ+ community in Chechnya fear for their lives. For the second time since 2017 innocent people have been rounded up and tortured for being queer. I can’t imagine the fear going through these peoples’ minds as they hide in plain sight unable to be who they are for fear of being murdered. They have nowhere to go and no one to turn to as even family members have turned in brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, and uncles to the authorities if they are discovered.
This needs to stop NOW. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights needs to be upheld and those attacking it need to be dealt with. I cannot believe that atrocities like this are still going unpunished in 2019 and that we as a species have no learned from past mistakes (Holocaust, Colonization). Genocide is genocide, no matter the reason.
If something is not done now, this will only escalate – first LGBTQ+ and then other groups and other countries until we have another holocaust on our hands. Russia has to be told that these atrocities cannot be ignored.
